Trains of Cuba – Sugar Steam Vol. 4 – C.A.I. Rafael Freyre
Visited Sugar Mills
C.A.I. Rafael Freyre – 762 mm
Rafael Freyre mill near the town of Holguin, capital of the eastern province of the same name, is located in the vicinity of the Hotels and resorts of Guardalavaca and its beaches. It is surely one of the most attractive destinations for the railway fan in Cuba. The Central Rafael Freyre, formerly called Santa Lucia, lies in the coastal plain, just north of a mountainous region. Sugar cane harvested in the hills is brought here on a ample railway system in 2ft. 6 in gauge or 762 mm. All steam engines ever built for Rafael Freyre, a total of 11, were delivered by Baldwin Locomotive Company of Philadelphia from 1882 to 1924. Today, 7 Consolidations and the little loco No. 1 "La Mambisita" are still in working condition, and bear the burden of the entire traffic at this mill, except for shunting. Three Russian diesels of the 60ties and two even older American ones are in charge of shunting on the mill grounds and occasionally haul a heavy train from Los Mangos, an easily accessible loading point to the west.
